Coffee for Peace in Colombia is an alliance of coffee farmers and market allies created to develop, facilitate and promote the trade of traceable coffees from historic violent zones in Colombia.
Colombia is in the middle of a historic peace process, after fifty plus years of violence. The success of this monumental task rests not only on the political will of the government of Colombia and former rebels, but also on the willingness of the international community to support Colombia economically during this transition. For the thousands of farmers who live in post-violent regions of Colombia, this is an opportunity to leave behind the violence of the past, where production of illicit crops was the norm, and embrace a peaceful future through the production of specialty coffee.
In the regions of Antioquia, Bolivar, Caqueta, Cauca, Meta and Valle del Cauca, Coffee for Peace in Colombia initiative is seeking to make specialty coffee a key component in the transition to peace. Through targeted technical training to improve coffee quality, as well as market linkages, thousands of coffee farmers are tapping into specialty markets, thereby increasing their incomes and helping to sustain the fragile peace process.
Coffee has been a faithful companion of Colombia for more than 350 years. Today it continues to support the construction of a new future for the coffee farmers.
The Coffee for Peace initiative has a primary goal of linking farmers to specialty coffee markets. In 2018 the initiative facilitated trades at over $1.61 per lb.
We have a hands on approach to farmer organizational business development. We coach the organization managers through each trade, progressively building their ability to execute international trades autonomously. As of June 2019 we have actively coached 25 farmer organizations.
Cup quality is the sum of coffee farmers production, processing and conservation efforts. We developed clear criteria for Washed Micro-Milling Best Practices and a hands on educational program to improve the processing and conservation of coffee. As of June 2019 more than 2500 farmers have been trained.
Coffee for Peace is an initiative led by the Colombian National Federation of Coffee Growers (FNC), supported by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), for coffee farmers, exporters, importers, roasters and consumers around the world.
